I'm Ticked OFF!!

 Monday Rant
Back to Full Blog

In the past week or so I've listened to the news, mostly on the radio back and forth to work. Two things have really rubbed me the wrong way.

I must rant.

Nebraska is trying to make a law where if you are smoking in the car with children under 16 you will be pulled over and ticketed for $40-$150. There are other states with similar laws.

SMOKING.

I am not suggesting I approve of smoking with children present. Studies show children of smokers have increased ear infections, repiratory infections, colds etc.

Let's ticket the parent on the cell phone while the children are passengers...this seems just as dangerous to me.

You know if these people are smoking with their children in the car they are doing it in their homes, police raids on smokers in their homes?

POLICE

With the drugs, gangs, and the violent crimes in our cities this seems like a huge waste of police hours. They did say the ticketed parents will be offered a smoking cessation program with their first offensive. That's the key, education. Making educated choices, not laws!!

 One more.... soft drink taxes.

Yep, have a coke and a smile and a tax.

coke

The American Medical Association will consider a recommendation that the nation's largest physicians' group lobby Congress for a tax on soda and other soft drinks to fund anti-fat programs.

Come on now!!

This just gets me. What about the skinny people drinking sugary beverages.

What next?

Did I wake up in the wrong country?

So when you're out today going through the drive thru with your children you best be putting that cigarette out and please order a diet coke with your Big Mac!!

Big Mac

Nursey,

I swear this country is going to hell in a hand basket. American is not the land of the free nor the home of the brave anymore. Before you know it democracy will be no more, but a dictatorship. I am opting to move to another country myself! If it isn't one thing it is just another stupidity just like this, and it is downright scary. God only knows that the next election will bring.

I don't smoke in any car but my own and only when alone. One of these days I'll have to quit because the places in NY state where I can smoke are getting fewer. Probably a good thing, but I hate being legislated into a corner like this.

Thanks for stopping by!!

I guess the thing that ticks me off the most is law makers just having to get in your business. Really, I think there are bigger fish to fry when it comes to law enforcement. Again, it's education. Taxing soft drinks to fight obesity...how about Burger King, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen....Mom's hot apple pie. It's just asinine!

The smoking issue will live on forever. I do believe people have a right to clean air, enjoying a meal without second hand smoke, but please stay out of private property... or pay my car payment if you want to be the boss of it!!

Nursey - Oh my you are onto my wagon!!!! We want to run people's personal lives and let the criminals run free!!! You want to know why? Because the police are scared of the criminals and the places that they hang out so they figure if they can get the good people in trouble and fill the courts and their time with them they at least do not have to fear so much for their lives. Actually I had someone tell me that when they had a job delivering supenas for court cases. I do not smoke but I worked as a nurse for years and alot of my coworkers did then - I just dealt with it. As for the tax on soda - good grief!!!! Where is personal responsibility!!!!!!! For anything any more!!!!!!
I do not know if this makes any sense - maybe I am just rambling but I am sick and tired of the stupidity of our politicians!!!!! Why not take care of the real problems in our country????? June

Sign me up for the rant party - do they have a presidential candidate yet??? I think last time it was Ralph Nader - this year it might be Ron Paul.... he is against more stupid laws...that try and control our behavior.

Nursey, you have a terrific blog. Visually engaging and the text is short, to the point and clear. I should do half as well.

As to the smoking in the car thing, is it possible to arrest a single mom for having a man sleep over? Stay over boyfriends are a bigger threat to children than 2nd hand smoke in my limited view.

Of how about just arresting any woman (and the man responsible) who has a child out of wedlock. That's the number one cause of child poverty in America (not the Republicans as some have suggested).

Yes, this has real promise. We (certainly not they) should be setting all the standards and punishing those who don't live by them. For their own good, of course.

Wait a minute, that sounds like, well, the religious left.

Sorry to get political. I like your blog a lot.
